Hypothermia Cap

The Akromed cold cap can prevent alopecia during chemotherapy.

As a result of product development over a period of three years, the Akromed cold cap now comes in a moulded shape without a seam.
The cover material is a waterproof stretchable fabric which can be sponged with water and soap.
The chin-strap assures proper contact with the scalp.

It has been demonstrated by numerous clinical tests that hypothermia of the epicranium reduces the occurrence of alopecia as a result of chemotherapy.

Description
General Information

The psychological and social impact of hair loss can be quite dramatic and in the interest of the patient every effort should be made to alleviate or eliminate altogether this unpleasant side-effect of chemotherapy.

It has happened more than once that a patient has rejected treatment because of this undesirable effect, which for many patients ranks before nausea and vomiting in terms of factors that aggravate their treatment.

The Akromed hypothermia cap creates a vasoconstriction at the hair follicle level over the entire scalp, starting from the hairline base at the neck. The vasoconstriction and the resulting lower metabolic rate restrict the blood flow and penetration of the cytotoxics to the hair follicle cells, preserving the hair.

The Akromed hypothermia cap is generally well tolerated, even during cures lasting several hours (maximum tested: infusion of three hours). Headaches may occur during the first minutes of wearing the cap but it gradually subsides and patients report no discomfort in most cases.

Every cap is supplied with an insert designed to maintain the shape. It is important to keep this insert and to put it into the cap prior to placing back into the deep-freezer.
The gel inside the cap absorbs liquids. Do not soak the cap.
We recommend to keep the cap in a plastic bag in the freezer to optimise its lifetime.
